What Is DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion)?
A neutral, attributed definition — what the term means and how supporters and critics use it.
DEI stands for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion — an umbrella term for policies and programs organizations use to address representation and treatment of different groups. "Diversity" refers to the mix of backgrounds in an organization, "equity" to fairness in opportunity and outcomes, and "inclusion" to whether people feel welcomed and able to participate fully.
In practice, DEI initiatives can include recruitment aimed at underrepresented groups, employee training, mentorship programs, and dedicated staff or offices. The approach became widespread in corporations, universities, and government in the 2010s and early 2020s, and has since become a major political flashpoint, with a wave of organizations expanding — and, more recently, scaling back or ending — such programs.
What DEI programs involve
Common DEI measures include diverse hiring efforts, anti-bias or cultural-competency training, employee resource groups, supplier-diversity targets, and equity reviews of pay and promotion. Scope varies widely by organization, from voluntary networks to formal offices with dedicated budgets.
What supporters say
Supporters argue DEI broadens opportunity, corrects historical and ongoing disadvantages, and improves organizations by bringing in wider perspectives. They frame it as fairness and good business, expanding the talent pool and better serving diverse customers and communities.
What critics say
Critics argue that some DEI practices amount to preferential treatment based on group identity, can conflict with merit or with civil-rights law, and impose ideological training. Recent legal rulings on race-conscious admissions and executive actions have driven many institutions to end or rebrand DEI programs.
