What Does the Bible Say About Fear?
"Do not be afraid" is one of the most repeated commands in Scripture, spoken to patriarchs, prophets, and ordinary believers facing real danger. The reason given is almost always the same: not that the threat isn't real, but that God is present. Isaiah 41:10 and Joshua 1:9 both ground courage in God's nearness — "for I am with you" — rather than in the absence of trouble.
The New Testament distinguishes a paralyzing fear from a reverent "fear of the Lord." 2 Timothy 1:7 says God did not give believers a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-control, while the "fear of the Lord" in Proverbs is awe and reverence that is the beginning of wisdom.
