What Does the Bible Say About Gratitude?
Thankfulness is woven through the whole Bible as the natural response to who God is and what He gives. "Give thanks in all circumstances" is not a suggestion but "the will of God in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:18), and the Psalms repeatedly call worshipers to "give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good." Gratitude anchors the believer in God's goodness even when circumstances are hard.
Scripture also treats thankfulness as an antidote to anxiety and discontent: Paul pairs prayer "with thanksgiving" as the path to peace (Philippians 4:6), and Colossians urges an "overflowing with thanksgiving" heart. Gratitude, in the Bible, is less about feeling and more about a settled posture of recognizing every good gift as coming from God.
