What Does the Bible Say About Grief and Loss?
The Bible honors grief rather than rushing past it. "Jesus wept" at the tomb of His friend Lazarus, even knowing He would raise him — showing that sorrow over death is not a failure of faith. God is called "the Father of mercies and God of all comfort," and the Psalms give grieving people honest language for their pain.
What sets Christian grief apart, Paul says, is hope: believers do not "grieve like the rest, who have no hope" (1 Thessalonians 4:13), because of the resurrection. Revelation 21:4 looks ahead to a day when God "will wipe away every tear" and death itself is gone. Grief remains real and heavy, but it is held within the promise that death is not the final word.
