Dazed And Confused Mitch McConnell Reappears After Three Month Hiatus

He's 84-years-young and the poster child for term limits - Mitch McConnell has been a thorn in the side of the Trump Administration for years.  A classic Neo-Con, McConnell has continued to oppose voter identification under the Save Act and Trump's tariff policies.  He blames Trump for the events of January 6th and criticized Trump's sweeping pardons of J6 political prisoners.  

The Kentucky Senator has also been a primary proponent of US intervention in Ukraine, and much like the late John McCain and late Lindsay Graham, he has clamored for more military spending and aid which places the US at odds with Russia.

Mitch McConnell has remained largely out of public view from mid-June to mid-September after "a fall" at his Washington home that led to hospitalization.  He last voted in person on June 11th.  His office gave few details for weeks which fueled speculation about his health and fitness to serve. 

This is not the first time the Senator's physical and cognitive health have come into question.  In 2023, McConnell seemed to break down into a daze on several occasions, leaving everyone to question who is actually deciding how he votes in the Senate.  

Well, it would appear that "the turtle" is back in action, though not as triumphantly as some hoped.  

During the roughly 92-day absence he missed about 60 Senate floor votes.  He returned to the Capitol this week in a wheelchair, looking frail and speaking slowly. He cast a vote that evening for a judicial nominee (Matthew Byrne) and told reporters it was “time to get back to work.”

He said he is “not quite back to 100%” but would try to be present for tough votes. Priorities he mentioned: finishing the farm bill, supporting NATO, and backing Ukraine against Russia. He did not take questions about whether he would serve out his term, which ends in January 2027.

He is not running for reelection.

McConnell's disappearance and limited updates from his office led Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and others to publicly question his capacity to serve.  Questions have also been raised over the lack of cognitive testing in the US government in light of McConnell's condition.  Similar to Joe Biden during his Administration, the public is concerned that unelected actors behind the scenes are dictating policy using elderly and dementia addled politicians as proxies.
