You can win without matching five numbers

Both games pay out on far more than the jackpot. Matching just the Powerball or the Mega Ball on its own wins a small prize, and every tier above that pays more. That is why checking a ticket is worth doing even when it is obvious the jackpot did not hit — a surprising share of prizes go unclaimed each year.

Why prize amounts are shown as ranges

The match result this tool gives you is exact, but the dollar figures are ranges because both games multiply non-jackpot prizes. Powerball's Power Play is an optional $1 add-on multiplying prizes 2x to 10x, with Match 5 capped at $2 million. Mega Millions builds a 2x to 10x multiplier into every $5 ticket, so there is no un-multiplied prize at all. Payouts also differ by state and are pari-mutuel in California, meaning they float with ticket sales. Treat the ranges as a guide and the official prize chart as authoritative.

Just the Powerball itself wins a prize. Matching the red Powerball alone pays $4 before Power Play, and prizes increase from there through nine total tiers up to the jackpot at five numbers plus the Powerball. The odds of winning something are about 1 in 25.
Do I win anything with 3 numbers?
