Best World News Sources

The 9 world publishers Alto monitors, with 33,858 stories indexed between them. Counts and cadence are live, not a hand-maintained list.

Foreign coverage is where distance does the most damage. A story filed from a capital by a resident correspondent and the same story rewritten from a desk two continents away can differ enormously in what they treat as obvious. Reading several outlets on a single conflict is the cheapest available correction for that, and it surfaces the detail a single wire report compresses away.

How to read across world sources

Watch for stories that appear in one country's press days before they reach another's — that lag is often the most informative thing about the coverage. Where an event is contested, note which side each outlet's sourcing actually comes from.

Listing a publisher here means Alto monitors its feed consistently — it is not an endorsement of its reporting, and the views in any aggregated story are the publisher's own. See Methodology for how sources are selected and Editorial Standards for the policies behind it.

World Sources — Frequently Asked Questions

How can I follow international news from multiple countries?
Aggregate rather than subscribe. Alto pulls the world desks of several publishers into one feed, so competing accounts of the same event sit next to each other instead of in separate apps.
Why do world news outlets report the same event so differently?
Access, sourcing, and audience. An outlet with correspondents on one side of a conflict will inevitably reflect what that side lets it see. Comparing two accounts is usually more informative than trusting either.
