What Does the Bible Say About Suffering?
The Bible never trivializes suffering, but it insists it is not meaningless. Paul writes that "suffering produces perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4), and that God works "all things together for good" for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Present affliction is described as "light" and "momentary" compared to the "eternal weight of glory" it is producing (2 Corinthians 4:17).
Scripture also gives suffering a companion: God's presence. The Psalms walk "through the valley of the shadow of death" without fear because "you are with me," and Jesus Himself is called a "man of sorrows, acquainted with grief." The Bible does not always explain why a particular trial comes, but it promises that God is near in it, redeems it, and will one day end it entirely.
